Do you desire to put your mark on our industry and to create something of your own? I see that a lot and applaud that drive.

Yet, how do you know if you are ready to take the plunge?

In working with designers and artisans, I begin by inquiring about your motivations. As passionate as you might be about your creative vision and your craft, building a beautiful product is vastly different from building an enduring business. Further, becoming your own boss requires that you see yourself as a business owner and manager. This paradigm shift reveals the real commitment that you undertake in launching a brand. With so much at stake, the business must serve to fulfill the creative individual’s personal goals.

Aside from your personal motivations, your product’s potential in the market must be assessed. This entails bench-marking competitors within your chosen sector in terms of product breadth, pricing and the like. More importantly, you need to understand the story your product tells. After all, the market might be saturated with product, but the customer always loves a good story.

Your readiness to start your own business becomes clearer when these questions have been answered. While you may worry about having the capacity to realize your creative vision, operational challenges can usually be surmounted with appropriate planning, the right outsourcer, and  sufficient resources. Assessing your readiness is challenging because it is qualitative and involves straight-forward conversations.

Entrepreneurship often requires you to choose the path not taken. Your ability for self-reflection can make the difference.
